You might have seen people on social media or people you know ditch the gender-specific she/her and he/him pronouns and use they/them or even Ze/hir, but do you understand what it means?
Using pronouns that don’t resonate with your assigned gender at birth isn’t exclusive
to those who are transgender or strictly non-binary, but also those who identify with a different gender identity, or even cisgender people who just resonate with different pronouns. Gender identity and pronouns don’t have to, and won’t always match.
Pronouns can be important to people, it provides a sense of identity to those who don’t use their assigned birth sex pronouns. By using a person's preferred pronouns you are showing your respect for them.
What should you do if you accidentally use the wrong pronouns or misgender someone? It’s simple just apologise, correct and move on. We all mess up now and again, however, it’s on you to ensure you learn and remember for next time.
